Thanks to its fabulous ambience, the Appian Way - the Regina Viarum (queen of all roads) - takes us back to History with a capital "H", magnificently brought to life by Hollywood in unforgettable movies like Spartacus and Quo Vadis? The Hostaria Antica Roma is a necessary stop along this journey back in time. In fact, although there are no props or cinema tricks here, reminders of the past come to the surface every step of the way with the sheer force of historical truth, from the remains of patrician villas spread out along the road to the extraordinary colombarium built in the Augustan age that serves as a backdrop to the dining area nestled in greenery. The setting is very evocative and so is the menu, which borrows recipes from Apicius, while there is a strong Mediterranean stamp on the modern dishes. Michael Schumacher, maybe thinking about chariot races, the Formula One of ancient Rome, enjoys the cuisine as well as the show....and so do Sharon Stone searching for intimancy and Fidel Castro's son, perfectly at ease in the dreamy atmosphere of the Regina Viarum, suspended in time.
